The Taizan Fukun Honmyo Zokusei Festival is regarded as one of the most venerable rites of Onmyodo. Since ancient times it was revered and performed among the Imperial family, members of the royal household, court nobles and shogunal families as a special faith and rite dedicated to the Big Dipper. According to the tradition carried by this shrine, no other sect or ritual system could perform it; only the Tsuchimikado family, also known as the Abe family, inherited this sacred secret rite.
Each person is said to receive a governing birth star according to the date of birth. These stars are embodied as nine divine beings shining in the heavens. Each year they leave their original positions, move through the nine directions, and return to their first seats after nine years.
During this cycle, the human soul is said to respond to the movements of Heaven. Body and mind can enter a delicate state and may encounter unforeseen calamity, illness or misfortune. In such circumstances, a special prayer is offered to the divine power of the Big Dipper that governs fortune—Taizan Fukun Okami, identified with Taiitsu, who presides over all phenomena. Through the solemn rite of Kikon, or the return of the soul, the spirit is restored to its original purity and protected from calamity. Thus the soul regains its incomparable radiance and one’s fortune is brought to greater flourishing.
We respectfully announce that the sacred secret rite handed down from Abe no Seimei, the Taizan Fukun Honmyo Zokusei Festival, will be conducted solemnly from 11:00 a.m. on February 4, 2026, the first day of spring in the traditional calendar.
