Visiting Tensha Shrine

Tensha Shrine is located in Natasho, Oi Town, Fukui Prefecture. The shrine’s rites and calendar-making tradition are carried on here.

Access

By car

The shrine stands along National Route 162, the historic road from Kyoto to Wakasa, also known as the Shuzan Kaido and as one of the Saba Kaido routes.

• From central Kyoto: about 2 hours north via National Route 162.
• From the Nagoya area: take the Hokuriku Expressway and then the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway; from Obama Interchange, travel south on National Route 162. About 3 hours in total.
• From Obama City: about 30 km south on National Route 162, approximately 30 minutes.
• From Obama-Nishi Interchange on the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway: approximately 45 minutes.
• From Tsuruga Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway: travel west on National Route 27 for about 100 km, approximately 90 minutes.

Parking

Parking is available across National Route 162 from the shrine. Look for the sign reading “Natasho Notaoi—the home of Onmyodo and the calendar.”

By bus

The Daiwa Kotsu shared bus on the Natasho Line runs between Hotel Seiryukan and Obama Daini Junior High School. The nearest stop is Shiroya, a five-minute walk from the shrine. Service is limited to six trips on weekdays and three on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. Please check the operator’s current timetable before traveling. Prayer and Purification Rites

Prayer rites are performed when the moon is full, while the purification rite known as Gejo-no-gi (解除の儀) is performed at the new moon. Because the dates are fixed, applications are accepted through the pages below.
