On August 1, 2026, Tensha Shrine will conduct the Nagoshi Purification and Hassaku Prayer Festival in accordance with the ritual principles of the ancient Taizan Fukun ceremony.
The purification rite of the sixth lunar month is often written today as Natsukoshi no Harae, but it was traditionally known as Nagoshi no Harae. It has been handed down as a rite that dispels harmful and unruly forces and restores harmony to the qi of Heaven and Earth.
The close of the sixth lunar month is an important turning point as the qi changes from summer to autumn. In the theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Phases, summer corresponds to Fire and autumn to Metal. The meeting of these seasons was understood as a time when the opposing relationship between Fire and Metal could disturb the flow of qi. Nagoshi Purification is therefore an important rite for clearing the calamities that arise at this seasonal boundary, removing the transgressions and impurities borne by the body, and restoring harmony to the qi of Heaven and Earth.
Hassaku means the first day of the eighth month. It falls at an important time before the arrival of the harvest season. Since ancient times, it has been observed as a rite of gratitude for the blessings of Heaven and Earth and as a prayer for a rich harvest and peaceful daily life.
By conducting Nagoshi Purification and the Hassaku Festival together, we pray to remove transgressions and impurities, purify body and spirit, calm the calamities that may arise at the turn of the season, and bring everyone longevity, well-being and peace.
Those attending on the day may take part in the offering of a tamagushi sacred branch. People who live far away or are unable to attend may also apply to have prayers offered on their behalf.
